Dear _,
Currently a student of chemistry at the Beijing Normal University, I am scheduled to graduate in June with a B. S. degree. The university has offered, on the basis of my outstanding academic record, to exempt me from the usually mandatory examinations for graduate studies, should I decide to join its M. S. program. After weighing all the pros and cons, I now prefer to pursue my graduate studies with your university, as I think it will put me on better footing for my career.
My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was first fostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up of professionals. My grandfather graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Doctoral degree in engineering, a highly unusual accomplishment for a citizen of mainland China in those years. My father, a professor of mathematics, was my main source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with the Beijing Mathematics Olympic School. My mother, a senior engineer of chemical engineering, was the motivation behind me as I participated in a variety of scientific activities such as the Solar Energy Club. Such a family environment has bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to take advantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the field of chemistry.
Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studied diligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background in chemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114 undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistry literature than most of other students. By satisfying my thirst for more knowledge, I have kept myself abreast of the new developments in chemistry around the world. I have also excelled in mastering foreign languages. Although I have never majored in the study of any particular language, my English proficiency has been improved to a point where it is comparable to that of most English majors in Chinese universities, and for that, I have been exempted from having to take an English course in the upper years. In recognition of my consistent excellence, I have been awarded the First-Class Excellent Academic Scholarship for three year.
Education at the Beijing Normal University emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience. In the summer of 1995, I joined Professor Tian's team to work o the synthesis of inorganic materials. In , professor Guo made me a member of his research team, which gave me good exposure to unsymmetrical synthesis. I am now carrying out (sophisticated) experiment under the direction of Dr. Wang. Through these arrangements, I have gained good experiences in laboratory research and greatly improved my skills for scientific experimentation. Starting from the beginning of next semester, I will be writing my graduation paper under the seasoned guidance of professor (zhong kexue), a research fellow from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As the Beijing Normal University specializes in training teachers, I have also taken quite a number of general education courses, such as phycology, pedagogy and teaching methods. And earlier this year, I was awarded the Excellent Teaching Assistantship for my outstanding performance during the internship at a high school.
I did not allow my heavy load of study to deter me from taking part in extracurricular activities. As the chair of the charity survives committee on campus, I honed my organizing skills and augmented my work efficiency. Convinced that the meaning of life comes from helping others, I have always been most obliging whenever anyone comes to me for help, which has won me lots of friends. Such personality, combined with my intellectual vigor and determination, should stand me ready for any challenges.
I am applying for acceptance into your program because I know that your country has leading the way in the development of chemistry, and I would like to put myself on the cutting edge of the field. I believe that your graduate school can offer the kind of academic quality and environment that I need. I am particularly interested in analytical and physical chemistry, as I have been fascinate by both its theoretical foundations and its practical promise. I am also interested in polymer chemistry and environmental chemistry. The completion of graduate studies with your program will not only enable me to realize my most cherished childhood dream but also put me in a much better position to serve my country.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could give favorable consideration to my application for acceptance and financial aid.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
Few aspects of life fall outside the scope of chemistry and this is what fascinates me about this dynamic and fundamental science subject. From a young age I have enjoyed and excelled in mathematics which reflects my logical and enquiring mind. Thus, I made the decision at high school to study mathematics as well as two sciences as part of the International baccalaureate. It was during this part of my education that I discovered my interest for Chemistry and my desire to study the subject at a higher level. Furthermore, I developed an enthusiasm for the topics of energetics and in particular, organics. My practical skills have been greatly enhanced through the study of Biology and Chemistry and the assessment of my abilities. Earlier this year I completed the 'Group 4 Project' which required me to utilise many life skills as well as calling on the skills learnt in my two science subjects. The 'Group 4 Project' consists of a group of 8 students formulating a research question, planning and executing relevant experiments and finally drawing and presenting conclusions. Good teamwork and practical skills were a must and I was pleased to be awarded very high marks. My love for chemistry stems from an appetite to understand the physical world around me and learn about, what is sometimes referred to as the central science.
The subjects I study at a standard level differ greatly from my higher and subsequently they have enabled me to broaden my knowledge. This is partly the reason I chose the IB. Another salient reason as to why I chose to take the IB was because of the opportunities the course offered through the inner hexagon. My studies of Theory of Knowledge have helped me to evolve an analytical and questioning mind which I feel is very applicable in the ever expanding field of modern chemistry. The IB is a very challenging course but I feel it has strengthened me in many aspects. Since starting the course in September of I have enhanced my time management and organisational skills in addition to becoming a more open minded and reflective person. Recently I have written and submitted a 3700 word extended essay about the area of circles and formulation of Pi, requiring me to exercise both my research and essay writing ability.
Presently I am working towards achieving my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and during my Easter holiday last year, I travelled to South Wales in the company of a group of 6 friends with the ambition of qualifying for the final assessed expedition. I believe that I showed great determination over the four days walking as well as overcoming the challenge of being self sufficient. My other pastimes include trampolining, playing the bass guitar and practising parkour. I love being involved in sport and through parkour I can show self expression, control and discipline. A level of self confidence, an ambitious mind and a hardworking attitude towards improving are all qualities I feel parkour has helped me to achieve. Over the year and 6 months I have attended the Sixth Form I have completed over 150 CAS hours by recording my past times and charity work in a fair-trade coffee shop. Parallel to my studies, I enjoy working as a waiter in a local hotel. This involves me being punctual, hardworking, sociable and most of all, responsible for my own thinking and acting upon this. These are all skills that I believe are vital for any perspective university student.I am greatly looking forward to the opportunities that university has to offer me both academically and socially. My passion for Chemistry, determination and positive attitude lead me to the conclusion that studying a course at university that will both excite me and satisfy my thirst for knowledge, such as chemistry, is the next step for me and my education. My eventual aim is to become a teacher of Chemistry at GCSE level and to inject the excitement into the subject that I have discovered.
Yours sincerely,

Nearly everyone has a dream in their youth, and the seeds of my dreams began thrusting up when they touched the soil of Chemistry. I was fascinated by the distinctive individual properties of chemical substances and marveled at phenomena displayed in experiments. They inspired me to explore the mystery of chemistry and make use of that power. Combining science and engineering, Chemical Engineering is a dynamic and continually evolving field of study. So, following my graduation from high school, I applied for the School of Chemical Engineering & Technology at _x University, which is the best university in this discipline (as ranked by the Chinese Ministry of Education).
During my four years of college study, I had built up a solid fundamental knowledge of science and engineering. Devoted and hardworking, I was awarded a scholarship every year by the University. During the course of my undergraduate study, I gradually understood the importance of chemical engineering, which is the backbone of our society and has potential to help people make better lives. I felt the weight of this responsibility, and hoped I could be a researcher in chemical industry in the future. So it is necessary to pursue further study in this field.
I started my first step by being an undergraduate research assistant for Professor _x when I was a junior. My program deals with the synthesis and photo-luminescence of porphyrins. With the guidance of my advisor and the cooperation of a doctoral student, I designed the reaction route and conditions, then, synthesized and analyzed the target product. To better accomplish my research project, I took some optional courses like Organic Functional Material and Nanoscience and Technology. My academic ability improved greatly and I received encouragement from my advisor. During that period, my advisor also told me, “The main difference between undergraduate students and graduate students is creativity; a graduate student’s responsibility is to create knowledge, not to obtain knowledge again.” Inspired by her words, I strove to inject my research with greater creativity. As reactants in my experience were very expensive and the yield of the product was very low, I tried many new synthesis schemes and introduced bold modifications. Implementing new catalysts into conventional methods increased the product yield and purity. The result turned out to be rewarding--- a Chinese paper based my results is in preparation. I am confident that my research experience and potential will benefit me in my future study and research.
Due to my outstanding research records, I was selected from thousands of candidates in China to intern in __x Electron Material Company-- a subordinate company of Chinese Academy of Sciences and _ Chemistry—a fortune 500 corporation. During that period, I understood better the formulas and equations in our textbooks from the real world production and procedures. I got to know more about the chemical industry and made huge strides in the areas of knowledge application and practical ability. In my opinion, accumulating experience in the chemical industry played an important role in preparing me for future study and research.
However, merely building up a solid foundation is not enough; there are much wider spaces for me to explore. I was quite active on campus, which provided me with many friendships and a sense of social responsibility which I believe is important. I also attended a Sino-American college student summer camp, through which I greatly improved my proficiency in English, and learned more about the culture and education of the United States. Especially after talking with some students from Chemical Engineering Department of _ University and University of _, I became more aware of that there is still a large gap between China and other modern nations in this field. This further contributed to my goal of pursuing further education in the USA.
As a senior about to end my four-year pursuit of knowledge here, I am clearly aware of that the achievements I have made are only the beginning. So, I really hope I can be admitted to the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of __x to pursue my graduate study because your university is one of the best public universities in the country and your department combines a diverse and talented group of faculty and students with interdisciplinary research areas. And the fact that your university provides a high faculty/student ratio (1/4) and family-like atmosphere has deeply impressed me. From my experience in scientific and engineering research, I have a strong interest in chemical engineering, and I firmly believe that my solid knowledge, background, research potential and strong love for chemical engineering, added to my strong sense of determination will prepare me a successful and bright future in your institution.

Dear _,
Nearly everyone has a dream in their youth, and the seeds of my dreams began thrusting up when they touched the soil of Chemistry.

Dear _,
I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would like the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to me because of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. I particularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to this during the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s world chemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range of industries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of career paths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.
I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which I hope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hope to study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run by the IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understanding and skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well as visual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team had to frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and this experience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a real life situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run by REACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise based upon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course at Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities was to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work. This year a fellow student and I were awarded £500 by the European Scholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-level History coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and history and further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my school on a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gained an insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working with different groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuring that staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participating in a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills. In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In September I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested my endurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I have been helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying as it gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularly books on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and I am currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my home network.
For admission to a university in England you have to fill in a form from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). They for a very reasonable fee provide all applicants to unversities and colleges in the UK with a way to apply to up to 6 universities (or multiple courses at, say 3 universities). Part of the form (apart from all the obvious details such as name and address), is half a page where you are asked to write about yourself, your interests and so on. Inevitably you have to make it sound as good as possible, as you're trying to sell yourself to the universities you're applying to...I applied to the universities of Aston, Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Loughborough. All for an MEng (Master of Engineering degree) in Chemical Engineering, except for Bristol where I went for an MEng in Computer Science, so this is tailored towards those courses. Anyway... Here it is. I don't guarantee that you won't get bored! ;-). (NB this was written in the summer of , and is therefore not too current!).Reasons for Course Choice
Since beginning secondary school, I've been very interested in Chemistry and Computing. Besides my normal schoolwork I've read around these two subjects. Because I am also very keen on Mathematics and Physics, I want to pursue a degree course that combines all or most of these. Both of my parents are Science/Engineering graduates and they have taught me some of the qualities needed for a degree course in this field. This has encouraged me to find out about the opportunities available. Aims
I have applied to several firms for sponsorship while at university and during a gap year, with the intention of getting Engineering-related work experience. This would give me valuable experience for the course at university. I hope to obtain a Master of Engineering degree and become employed in research and development in the oil or food industry. Eventually, I would like to do postgraduate study, and perhaps even teach Chemistry/Engineering. Interests
I play basketball, tennis, volleyball, and I like kayaking. By far my biggest sports interest, however, is orienteering. I've won several trophies for Andalusian and league championships, and I've helped to organise regional orienteering events. I have also designed the database system for my club. My greatest interest outside school is computing. I have done a large amount of web design. I help maintain the computer systems at my father's workplace; and I also do some part time work teaching people on a one-to-one basis how to use their computers. I like writing manuals or “notes” on things related to computers, and have published an article on web design in a small US computer magazine. I have written papers on the use of data-logging and other equipment for my school's science department. This year, I was responsible for laying out my school's entire yearbook using DTP software. Recently, I was employed developing a web site and training staff for an organisation in London. When I have time I play the keyboard, and also do some sound engineering: I used to operate the mixing desk at my local church, as well as help at my parents' workplace, which is a professional recording studio. I enjoy teaching and have given weekly tuition in Maths and English. General Points
I've lived in Spain for 14 years and am fluent in Spanish. In addition, my parents work with North Africans, Middle Easterners, Americans, Spaniards, Britons, and people of other nationalities. I have gained valuable experience growing up with many different cultures around me, and as a result appreciate the difficulties of cross-cultural communication. I have been part of several “King's Kids”, teams which perform music and dance all over Spain. This entailed travelling away from home for 3 weeks at a time, and having to work with around 60 other people. I think that this has made me a fairly rounded person, and I therefore feel confident about “fitting in” with people from any culture.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
Nearly everyone has a dream in their youth, and the seeds of my dreams began thrusting up when they touched the soil of Chemistry.
Yours sincerely,

ADS
IPRS
Dear _,
Since first being able to play on “Paint box” at lower school, I have always had a fond interest in computers. My decision to study computing at higher education level was an easy one. Firstly, I love using computers; in fact I am renowned as a bit of a computer trouble-shooter amongst my friends. Secondly it is my most successful subject. This is clearly shown from the outstanding grade B I achieved in my AS practical coursework module, which I thoroughly enjoyed completing.
Once completing my studies, I would hope to work in part of an ICT technical support team. As part of my work experience, I joined the ICT team at a local business where I was given lots of responsibility for ensuring backups were complete considering I was only a year ten student! As well as this I was also involved with the repair of computers and training some members of staff on new procedures.
Through my current studies, I have learnt many cross subject skills, as well as specific knowledge that relates to each module. For Example, I have learnt presentation skills and improved report writing skills throughout my subjects.
In design, I am currently making an office desk, which I thoroughly enjoy. During the design process of this process of this project I was able to use Pro-Desktop, a piece of software which allows you to create 3D rendered drawings. I think that using ICT in this way has lead to a significant improvement in my work. In Media Studies, I have developed my analytical skills, through comparing the view part of different films.
My current study of ICT is focused around a problem solution at the minute. From a previous job, I have decided to make a database system for ordering supplies for a pharmacy.
Through a part-time job at a local chemist, I have improved my confidence by talking to customers and helping them make a decision over their purchase. I was also given the responsibility handling cash through the operation of a till. I also have been given the responsibility of being a key holder to the shop.
In my spare time, I am involved with the scouts. I am currently working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Silver award where I am organising a 30 Mile hike for between 4-7 people. This will aid me in planning things in later life.
Overall I believe that a university education is an excellent way into the ICT industry and would love to be given the opportunity to study at your establishment.
