Imagine what it would be like growing up in a palace! That’s where we find little Moses in our Bible lesson today! Ooh, lets imagine were there with Moses, looking down the long hallways with shiny tile floors, seeing the tall marble pillars, and the richly colored fabrics that decorated his new home.

Moses had the best of everything:fine clothes to wear, the most delicious food to eat, servants to care forhim and spoil him, I'm sure! There was no one in Egypt who had a better education than Moses. He would have had the finest teachers in science, math and history. The Bible tells us that not only was Moses treated like a prince, but also he was princely in his ways.

Gods Word tells us that Moses was mighty in words and in deeds. (Acts 7:22) When people saw him, I'm sure they thought, My, what a handsome Egyptian prince. But even though Moses looked and dressed like an Egyptian, spoke their language and ate their food, he never forgot he was a Hebrew. It must have bothered him as he grew up to see the cruel treatment of his people by the Egyptians.

One day when Moses was about 40 years old, he went out and saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew man. Moses could not bear the unfairness of it, and after making sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. He thought no one knew. But do you know who was watching?Yes, God was watching!

The next day Moses again went out. This time he was disturbed to see two Hebrews fighting each other. Again, Moses intervened and tried to stop them. The one who was wrong said to Moses, Who made you a prince and a judge over us?Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian? This made Moses realize his sin was not hidden. And sure enough, very soon even Pharaoh knew about it and he ordered Moses to be killed.

Moses was already out of Egypt, thanks to God's good care of him. The handsome prince who had life so easy for 40 years, now found himself running for his life across hot dry deserts and mountains.

Moses came to the land of Midian and sat down to rest by a well, just as a group of 7 sisters came to water their father’s sheep. He watched as some rude shepherds came and tried to run the girls away.

Again, Moses to the rescue! We know Moses must have been a strong young man, for he ran those rude shepherds away and watered all the sheep for the 7 sisters. They told Jethro, their father, all about this handsome stranger. Quickly Jethro sent them back to bring Moses home to dinner.

Girls, you will like this part of the story! The Bible tells us that Moses not only stayed for dinner, but he continued to live with this family. Later, one of those 7 sisters became the wife of Moses! God blessed Moses not only with a safe place to live, but a loving family, and then later, 2 sons of his own. Moses settled down to become a husband, a father, and a shepherd taking care of his father-in-laws sheep。

They told Jethro, their father, all about this handsome stranger. Quickly Jethro sent them back to bring Moses home to dinner.

One day Moses led Jethros sheep to the backside of the desert, to Mount Horeb. Suddenly he caught sight of something very strange! It was a bush on fire, but yet the fire was not burning the bush up. As Moses came nearer to get a closer look at this strange sight, he heard a voice:“ Moses! Moses!” Moses said, here I am.

“Don’t come any closer. Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy ground. I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” You may be sure Moses did remove his sandals, but he also hid his face!

This wasn't just a burning bush! God's very presence and voice were there speaking to him! Moses was standing before his holy, all-powerful Creator!

Lets you and I think a minute. If you had been there, would you have to hide your face too? Why?Because of your sin. The Bible tells us that all people have sinned. We are not perfect like God is perfect. In so many ways we do things that do not please God, like thinking hateful thoughts and saying angry words, like making excuses for not doing our work.

That’s why Gods Word calls us sinners. Sin causes us to be away from God. No sin is allowed in His holy presence or in His beautiful and holy home in Heaven. But Gods Word tells us that He loves sinners!

But Gods Word tells us that He loves sinners! Romans 5:8 tells us that God proved His lovefor us, in that, while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Christ is the Lord Jesus Christ, Gods perfect and only Son. God sent Jesus to earth to take the punishment for your sin, which meant that Jesus hadto suffer a terrible death of being nailed to a wooden cross.

On that cross the Bible tells us Jesus gave His precious blood to pay for all our sin. He died, was buried, and rose again after 3 days. Now the Lord Jesus is in Heaven. When you believe what the Lord Jesus did for you and ask Him to come into your life and forgive your sin, He will. He will forgive you of your sin and make you clean and ready to stand in the presence of our Holy God. At that burning bush, Moses realized he was standing in the presence of his holy, all-powerful Creator!

God had a surprising message for Moses:“Moses, I have seen, I have heard, and I know all about the affliction and the sorrow of my people in Egypt. I am coming down to help them. And Moses, I am sending YOU to Pharaoh that you may bring my people out of Egypt.” What is this?! Moses is 80 years old now! He has been in the desert for forty years. And yet, God had chosen Moses to lead His people out of slavery to freedom!

But Moses began immediately to look at himself and all his weakness. Who am I that I should go and speak to a king, or to lead a great people?Moses didn’t think he could do the big job God was asking him to do! And he was right! He couldn’t! But remember our Bible verse?I Thessalonians 5:24 Faithful is he who calleth you who also will do it.

An 80-year old man couldn't do great things for God without Gods help, for sure! God assured Moses he would have that help. God said, Certainly I will be with you. Moses asked, when I go to the Israelites and say God sent me, and they say, what is His name? What am I supposed to tell them?

Now, boys and girls, you will think this is a strange name. God said:“Tell them that I AM THAT I AM sent you.” We can understand a lot about God from that name. It means that He is the same yesterday, today, forever. He has just as much power and love and life today, as He has ever had! And then God told Moses to tell the people of Israel this name:the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

But Moses was still afraid to go, so he made another excuse:“But they wont believe me.” God asked:“ What is that in your hand?” Moses answered, my shepherd’s rod. God said, Throw it down. When Moses did, that straight stiff rod became a slithering snake! And Moses ran from it! Wouldn’t you?Pick it up by the tail. And Moses did! Instantly it became a straight stiff piece of wood again!

That’s not all! Then God said, put your hand inside your coat. When Moses obeyed, and then pulled his hand out, oh! His hand was covered with the terrible disease of leprosy. Now put your hand inside your coat again. Moses did, and when he brought his hand out again, the leprosy was gone!

If you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour from sin, you are Gods child. He will ask you to do things for Him. But who is really doing the work?It is God working through you. Lets say our memory verse again. I Thessalonians 5:24, Faithful is he that calleth you who also will do it.

God was ready to do a great work through Moses. But oh no, can you believe Moses refused again! O my Lord, please send someone else! The Bible says God became angry with Moses, but He was still patient as He said, your brother Aaron speaks well. I will allow him to speak and you will do the miracles. Moses then made preparation to go to Egypt.

But even with a brother to help Moses, it would still be God Who would do the mighty work of leading His people!

Moses went back to Jethro and asked him to let him return to Egypt. His father-in-law agreed and soon Moses was traveling back through the deserts and mountains to return to Egypt after forty long years of being away. What would happen to Moses?Would Pharaoh listen?

Will the Hebrew leaders listen?Moses would have to depend on God for His help!

Do you remember from our last lesson what message Moses and his brother Aaron took to the king of Egypt?“The God of Israel says, Let my people go!”Do you remember Pharaoh’s proud answer?“No!”

Would you want to have to go back again and again to give the same message, knowing you would get the same answer? That’s what Moses and Aaron were commanded by theLord to do.

So let’s you and I quietly follow Moses and Aaron as they once again enter Pharaoh’s throne room in that splendid Egyptian palace. Let’s state the message along with Aaron, for he is the speaker:“The God of Israel says, Let my people go!”

“Show me a miracle, ”Pharaoh demanded. The Bible says, in Exodus 7:10, “and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent (or snake).” Imagine that snake slithering around on the palace floor. Would you and I have run away?

But what is this?Pharaoh called for his wise men and magicians, and the Bible tells us that they were also able, by the power of Satan, God’s enemy, to bring forth snakes. So now there were many snakes on the palace floor! But look at what is happening now! Aaron’s snake quickly swallows up all their snakes! What does that tell us?Our God is more powerful than Satan and all his tricks!

There is no God in all the earth like our powerful God! He is the One Who created all things by the word of His power. He is the God of Israel, and the God Who made you and loves you very much.

And He is the God Who caused Aaron’s snake to swallow those other snakes. But Pharaoh was so proud, and still refused to let the people of Israel go. God knew this would happen. The next morning God sent Moses to the bank of the Nile River where He knew Pharaoh would be stranding. Moses told Pharaoh that because he had not listened to the true and living God, the waters of the Nile River would be turned into blood.

It happened just as God said. The Bible tells us in Exodus 7:21, “And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.” In other words, wherever the people of Egypt had a pot or jar of water, they suddenly found blood in it instead. For seven days this plague was upon Egypt. But Pharaoh still said no to God.

God sent more plagues. He had a plan long before Moses went to Egypt, and God was simply carrying out His plan. Next, God sent a plague of frogs. There were frogs in the bread and frogs in the bed! Everyone’s bread and everyone’s bed.

Then God sent great clouds of gnats that tormented both the people and the animals. Pharaoh kept hardening his heart and saying no to God. God wanted Pharaoh to see .His power and believe on Him. God could have just taken His people of Israel out of Egypt without Pharaoh’s permission. But what did God say

Let’s read it in Exodus 8:22…God said He was doing all these things so that Pharaoh“may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.” Pharaoh’s pride kept him from believing and obeying the Lord.

God sent swarms of flies, a terrible disease upon the cattle and horses, and other livestock. One special thing God also began to do was to separate the Egyptians from the Hebrews. God spared His chosen people from the plagues, but the Egyptians continued to suffer. After the disease upon the livestock, came unbearably painful boilson the Egyptian people and on their animals.。

Then came the most frightening hail storm ever recorded in the history of Egypt:fire even ran along the ground during this storm and the huge balls of hail broke down trees, and ruined the crops that were coming up. Still Pharaoh hardened his heart. God then sent locusts that ate up every thing the hail had not destroyed! Boys and girls, can you understand what destruction Egypt was going through?

It seems Pharaoh finally understood, for Exodus 10:16 says, “Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the LORD your God,and against you.” Oh! It sounds like Pharaoh is humbling his heart before the Lord! It is sad that Pharaoh was really lying, for he changed his mind quickly after that.

But what IF he had really meant it when he confessed his sin?God would have shown wonderful forgiveness and grace to Pharaoh and his people. After all, every day God is forgiving people all over the world for all kinds of wrong things they think, and say and do.

All people have sinned and all have the same dreadful punishment awaiting them:forever being away from God. But God says He is not willing that ANY should perish, and that is why He sent His Son Jesus to endure the suffering and punishment for our sin. I John 4:14 says, “...the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”When Jesus was nailed to the cross long ago, He was taking all the sin of the world upon Him.

When He died and rose from the dead, He became the One Who could save us from our sin and take us to Heaven forever. What a great and everlasting blessing that will be for those who truly confess their sin and believe on the Lord Jesus! But Pharaoh was not truly confessing his sin. He was lying, for he did not let God’s peoplego.

God then sent a plague of thick darkness that kept the people of Egypt from even rising from their beds for 3 days. They couldn’t see anything! This was the ninth plague God had sent upon Egypt! Over and over again God tells us in His Word His reason for all these plagues. He could have just wiped Egypt off the map!

But He kept demonstrating His power so that Pharaoh and all of Egypt could understand that their gods were nothing, and turn to believe in the true and living God, soHe could save them. What stood in the way of God being able to save them?PRIDE. Pride was causing their hearts to be harder and harder.

Because of pride, Pharaoh and the Egyptians were missing the wonderful blessings of knowing the true and living God. But they were not missing His plagues! And the worst one is yet to come. But when it comes, you can be sure that Pharaoh WILL let God’s people go! What plague could have finally changed Pharaoh’s mind?Well, you’ll have to wait til next time, or you could read ahead in Exodus chapter 11 and 12!

Lets play Who Said It?I'll say the words from one of our Moses lessons, and you try to guess who said it! Ready?

All Hebrew boy babies must be thrown into the Nile River! Did you guess pharaoh?

Shall I call a Hebrew woman to nurse this baby for you? That was Marian!

Take care of this baby for me, and I will pay you. Did you guess the princess of Egypt?

I think I’ll call you Moses, because I drew you out of the water. That was the princess again.

Don’t come any nearer, take off your shoes for you are standing on holy ground. That was the Lord!

Who am I that I should go lead the people out of slavery? That was Moses, wasn’t it?

Do you remember how many times Moses offered excuses to God because he did not want to go back to Israel? Finally, as we begin our lesson today, Moses is ready to obey the Lord. Exodus 4:19 says, And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return to Egypt:for all the men are dead who were trying to kill you.

God was also saying Go to someone else. Moses had probably not seen his brother Aaron for the entire 40 years he was gone from Egypt. But as Moses began to travel back to Egypt, God spoke to Aaron there in Egypt:Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And so the two brothers met.

Together they began to speak to the elders of the people of Israel. They all gathered together for a meeting, where Aaron spoke all the words that God had told Moses, and Moses did those miracles God had shown him.

The Bible says in Exodus 4:3l, And the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. I’m sure their wholehearted response encouraged Moses and Aaron.

And they would need encouragement as they took the next step of obedience to God. They now had to confront Pharaoh, the king of Egypt。Being ushered into the presence of this wealthy and powerful king must have caused Moses and Aaron to feel nervous, but their message was just as God had commanded.

Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. “ Pharaohs answer was proud and disdainful:Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go?I do not know the LORD, and no! I will not let the people go.

Pharaoh was right in one way. He did not know the LORD, the true and living God. In Egypt there were many false gods. People worshipped the Nile River, the snake, the cat, and Pharaoh himself was considered to be a god. But our true and living God says in His Word the Bible:“For all the gods of the nations are idols:but the LORD made the heavens. “ (Psalm 96:5)

The LORD God not only made the heavens, He made all things, including you and me! And what a loving God He is, to tell us I have loved you with an everlasting love! There is no other religion or god anywhere in the world that can truly say those wonderful words! Do you remember what Gods wonderful love caused Him to do for us?

The Bible tells us there is none of us that do good, we all sin by breaking God’s laws. Even though children don’t usually murder or rob a bank, even children break Gods laws. How?Well, Do you disobey your parents, or pout to get your way?Do you say unkind words or think you are better than others?

Those are all things that God calls sin, or breaking His law. The punishment for breaking Gods law is that we are forever apart from God in a terrible place called Hell. But even as God said that sin must be punished, still His love caused Him to send someone to take that punishment for us. Yes, you remember, it was Jesus His perfect Son. Jesus suffering, bleeding, dying on the cross were all-necessary to pay for our sin.

Jesus died and was put away in a cold, dark tomb. But God raised Him up on the third day. Now Jesus is alive in Heaven. He loves you so much and He is ready to save you from your sin. He says, whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. There is no other god who loves us like that, because there is no other TRUE and LIVING God! It is sad that Pharaoh did not know Him.

Again Moses and Aaron made the same request. “Let my people go!” But Pharaoh angrily lashed back at the two men:You are keeping the people from their work! Then Pharaoh called in the officers who were in charge of the Hebrew slaves. From now on, don’t give them any straw to make brick. Make them find their own straw, and still demand that they make just as many bricks as before. They’re getting lazy and idle, that is why they are asking me to let them go.

Of course the officers had to obey the kings cruel order. But of course, the poor Hebrew people could not perform this impossible task! They were already being overworked, from dawn till dark. When the people were sent out to gather straw, they could not make as many bricks.

And because they couldn’t make many bricks, their Hebrew leaders were beaten by the Egyptian officers. Very soon those leaders came to Pharaoh to complain and ask why. What an evil and cruel king! He would not even listen, but demanded that they go out and do as he had said. Oh, how discouraged, how hopeless those Hebrew leaders felt as they left the palace!

As they went out, the Bible says that they met Moses and Aaron who were not far from the palace. And they turned their anger to Moses and Aaron:”You! You are the ones who have caused this! You might as well have put a sword in the hand of Pharaoh to kill us!

When something painful or unpleasant happens to us, isn’t it sometimes hard to trust God. Was it ever hard for Moses and Aaron and the Hebrew people! But God was working out His perfect plan, even when things seemed to be getting worse! And God encouraged Moses and said to him:I am the LORD. I am going to keep my promise。

Tell the people of Israel that I will bring you out from slavery to freedom! You will be my people and I will be your God. I will give you a good land for your very own. I am the LORD.Moses took that message to the people of Israel, but the Bible says they did not listen to Moses because they were in such great heaviness of spirit. 。

They were so beaten and tired from their cruel treatment. Then God told Moses to go back to Pharaoh. You and I can understand why Moses didn’t want to go. He said to God, Look now, the children of Israel have not listened to me, how can I expect Pharaoh to listen to me?Doesn’t that sound sensible'still God told Moses to go back to Pharaoh with that same message:Let my people go.

What would you do if you were Moses?Moses himself knew he would have to trust and obey the Lord. He would have to go back to Pharaoh. Did Moses understand why?No!

If you have believed on the Lord Jesus and asked Him to save you, you are His child.

Will you trust and obey God even when you don’t understand? No matter how long you have to wait, no matter what painful or unpleasant changes come, remember there is a wise and loving Heavenly Father Who is quietly working all things for your good.

Lindsay was so excited! Mother had just called from the doctor's office:”Lindsay, “ she said, ”We're going to have a new baby in the family!“ Lindsay thought of all the people she wanted to tell:her friend Amy next door, her grandmother, and her teacher at school!

In our Bible lesson today there was also a new baby, it was a boy! But shhh! Mother Jochebed and Father Amram are not telling ANYONE about their new baby son! And shhh! Big sister Miriam and brother Aaron were not allowed to tell either.

Why not?Because this was a Hebrew family and the King of Egypt had ordered that when a Hebrew baby was born, if it were a girl, it could live; but if it were a boy, it was to be thrown into the Nile River to drown! Why would the King make such a wicked rule? After all, if it hadn't been for a Hebrew man named Joseph, and if it hadn't been for the God of the Hebrews, there wouldn't even BE an Egypt, for God had used the Hebrews to save Egypt from starvation. But this new king did not remember Joseph, nor did he care about the Hebrews' God, Who is the true and living God Who created all things.

This new king had one big worry:He felt there were getting to be TOO MANY Hebrews, and that they were much stronger than the Egyptians. He said to his people, ”Suppose we have a war and those Hebrews decide to fight against us! We've got to do something to cut down their population and cut back their power.“

The king's plan was to make the Hebrew people work very hard as slaves, carrying heavy loads of stone and building treasure cities for himself. But a strange thing happened! The harder the Egyptians made the Hebrews work, the more they afflicted them.why, the more they grew! Finally, the king, or Pharoah as Egyptian kings were called, said to his people:”Every Hebrew girl that is born, let it live; but every Hebrew boy that is born, throw him in the Nile River to drown!“

Link:What a wicked, sinful heart Pharoah had to want to murder a little baby! You and I would never do that, would we?To kill a baby before it is born, after it is born, when it grows to be a child like you, or a grown-up like me.it is all the same to God.

It is murder and it is a terrible sin. Is it going to surprise you when I say to you that you and I have sinful hearts too?Even though we would never murder a precious baby, yet the Bible says, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:who can know it?

Jeremiah l7:9. Sometimes we think we are good because we see how bad other people are, but God sees that all our hearts are sinful. When you lie, disobey your parents, or say or do hurtful things to others, that is sin. And it is sin that keeps us away from God and His family. But God's loving plan for you is that you become part of His family and enjoy Heaven forever with Him! He has filled Heaven with wonderful things to make you happy forever. And He has made a way for you to have your sins forgiven and be in Heaven.

Do you remember that we have talked about the Lord Jesus Christ? As the perfect Son of God, He is the One Who carried out God's plan for your sin to be forgiven. Jesus took your punishment by suffering and dying on a wooden cross many years ago. When He was dying, He was not only giving His blood as a payment for your sin, but also suffering great pain for your sin. 。

After Jesus died, He was buried, came alive in 3 days and then went back to Heaven to be with God. He is alive in Heaven today and ready to forgive sin, no matter how wicked or sinful our hearts may be. It is sad that Pharoah did not care about God's forgiveness for his wicked, sinful heart. He was ordering that all the Hebrew boy babies be killed. That is why the family in our lesson today had to hide their new baby boy, and keep him a secret from everyone!

Day after day they hid him. It must've been hard, for babies cry loud, don't they?Do you suppose Mother Jochebed and Father Amram worried a lot?”What if an Egyptian neighbor comes by and hears the baby cry?“ ”What if brother Aaron forgets and tells some of his friends about his baby brother?“ ”What if the baby gets sick and needs a doctor?“ There could have been a lot of ”what if's“ to worry about, but the Bible tells us that this Hebrew family hid their baby ”by faith.“ That means they trusted God to take care of him. Jochebed and Amram were trusting God to take care of their baby boy.

After 3 months, the Bible says they could no longer hide him. But they were still trusting God, even as Jochebed took a big basket and put pitch or tar on it to make it waterproof. Tenderly she wrapped her healthy little boy and placed him in the basket. She and Miriam took him quietly down to the Nile River and put the basket afloat in the Nile River, wedged and hidden in some tall reeds by the bank of the river. Big sister Miriam was left to watch and see what would happen.

And she didn't have to wait long! She heard women talking and laughing, and peeping out from her place, Miriam saw, oh no! Not the princess of Egypt! Yes, she was lovely, but she was the daughter of the Pharoah who had made the rule to murder the Hebrew boy babies! Oh, how Miriam hoped she wouldn't see, but no! She DID see, in fact, she ordered her maid to go get that basket out of the reeds.

Shall we hold our breath with Miriam as the princess opens the basket and stares down at Miriam's darling baby brother! Oh, no the poor darling baby began to cry. Miriam heard the princess say, ”Oh, this is one of the Hebrew baby boys!“ The princess knew that baby was Hebrew, and she also knew her father's commandment! But God touched the heart of the princess, and she not only had compassion for that little fellow but adopted him as her own son! Then God put on Miriam's heart just the right thing to do.

She went to the princess boldly and said, ”Shall I go and call a Hebrew mother to help you care for this child?“ The princess said, ”Go.“ And Miriam went! She went straight to her own mother ! Quickly Jochebed went to meet the princess. How amazed she was to hear the princess say, ”Take this child away and nurse him for me. I will pay you to take care of him.“ Oh, what a wonderful God we have, children! We can trust Him to take care of us! MTS:Have you been fretting or worrying about things?

There are many dangers, many hard things in this world, even for children like you. But if you have believed in the Lord Jesus and asked Him to save you from your sin, you are His child. Take your worries to Him in prayer. Trust Him to take care of you! Remember that sometimes God takes the problem away from you. And at other times, God will take you away from the problem. Still there are times when your wise, loving Heavenly Father will take you right through the problem. No matter how God works, trust Him to take care of you in the very best way!

Jochebed walked home with her baby boy in her arms! She did not have to hide him now, and she would be paid to take care of her own son! Surely she and her family praised God together for His wonderful care of their son. They enjoyed every minute of the years they had together, and I'm sure Jochebed taught this little boy about the true and living God. When he was probably between 3 and 5 years old, Jochebed knew it was time to take him to the princess.

The princess took him and named him Moses, which means ”drawn out.“ Why do you think she named him that?Yes, because she drew him out of the water. No doubt Jochebed was sad to leave her little son at the palace, but she knew very well she could trust God to continue to care for little Moses.

A long time ago, there was a Bo Luo Nai City in the State of Jia Shi. Outside the city was a large forest, where 500 macaques lived.

One night the 500 macaques wandered around and came to a ni ju lu (bodhi) tree. Under the tree was a deep ancient well. The water in the well was very clean and reflected the full moon in the sky.

The leading macaque bent1 over the well and watched carefully for a while. Then it jumped onto the edge of the well and said to the others: ”Alas2! Today the moon has died and fallen into this well. Let us scoop3 it up together; otherwise the nights will be dark forever.“

All the macaques tweaked their ears and scratched their cheeks, saying:”The well is so deep. How can we scoop up the moon?“

The leading macaque had a sudden brainwave and said: ”I have it! I will climb up the tree and grasp a branch, then another one grasps my tail. In this way, one following another in succession4, can't we hang down into the well?“

When the other macaques heard this, they jumped with joy. So they linked their heads and tails together, extending5 longer and longer until they almost touched the surface of the well water. At this moment, the branch broke with a big crack and all 500 macaques fell into the ancient well.

The deer feared the leopard1 cat, the leopard cat feared the tiger, and the tiger the brown bear.

The brown bear resembled the fox but was bigger in size. It had long fur on its head, and could stand up like man. It had great strength and would devour2 man.

In the south of the State of Chu, there was a hunter good at ventriloquy. With a bamboo pipe he could imitate the cries of various kinds of wild animals.

Once, carrying his bow, arrows and firearms, he quietly went hunting in the mountain.

Up on the mountain, he first imitated the cries of the deer to lure3 the horde4 of deer to come over, so that he could shoot at them with the firearms. The leopard cat heard the cries of the deer and came running to devour the deer. The hunter was afraid of the leopard cat, so he hurriedly imitated the roar of the tiger to scare away the leopard cat. Hardly had the leopard cat been scared away when the tiger heard the roar and came. At this moment, the hunter was even more frightened, so he imitated the cries of the brown bear. As a result, the tiger was scared away like the leopard cat.

Then, when the brown bear heard the cries, it came to look for its companions. Seeing that it was a man, the brown bear at once struck him with its front paws, and tore him up with its teeth. In a short while, the hunter was torn to pieces and devoured5 by the brown bear.

The dancing bear

A bear, who had made his living by dancing for a long time, at length escaped from his master, and returned to his former companions in the woods.

His brothers welcomed him with most friendly growls1. The traveler now told what he had seen foreign countries, told a long history of his adventures, and, to exhibit his wonderful feats2, began, in an erect3 position, to dance the Polonaise. His brothers, who were watching the performance, were astonished at his grace, and tried to imitate his ballet steps. It was in vain, hardly were they raised on two legs when they fell again upon all fours. Seeing their awkwardness, the bear went on exhibiting some higher displays of his art, which, at length, aroused the envy of the others, and so they drove him from their society.

One day, the peachwood charm against evil hung on the door turned its face upward to curse the figure made of Chinese mugwort: ”Who do you think you are to dare to set yourself over my head?“

The figure of Chinese mugwort, unwilling1 to be outdone, looked down and retorted: ”It is summer now. You have only half a year to go, and can't live long. Why squabble over who is higher or who is lower?“

The peachwood charm was beside itself with rage, and answered back sarcastically2. Both sides refused to give in, and squabbled endlessly with a stream of abuse against each other.

At this moment, the deity3 of the door came to mediate4: ”It is only because we have no ability that we have to attach ourselves to the door of others. What's the point of quarrelling with each other?“

In the past, there was a man named Ai Zi who was fond of sailing on the sea.

One night, Ai Zi had his boat moored1 near a small island Around midnight, he seemed to hear someone weeping or talking under the water. So he listened intently, and soon he heard someone say: ”Yesterday the Dragon King issued an order that all living creatures with tails in water are to be beheaded. I am an alligator2 and have a tail. I am very frightened of being slaughtered3, so I am crying. You are a toad4 and don't have a tail. What are you weeping for?“

After a while, Ai Zi seemed to hear someone answer: ”Though I have no tail now, I am afraid that I may be traced back to the time when I was a tadpole5 with a tail then, so I am weeping."
