一用词根的必要性
首先，宏观上我要把 英语词根 与中文的 偏旁部首 做类比。可能当我们对中文掌握到一定程度后，就会忘记自己当初在学汉字时，对偏旁部首有多依赖。我上个月去书店的时候，翻了翻小学生用的新华字典：
除了按拼音检索以外，它还有偏旁部首检索。要知道，中文常用字只有 3000 左右，而英语常用词多达 3 至 6 万。中文母语者在学习初期，为了掌握 3000 汉字的 音形意，都要引入偏旁部首，那么我们把英语当作第二语言学习时，要想掌握 3 至 6 万英语单词的 音形意，又有什么理由拒绝运用成熟的词根系统呢?
再举个诉诸权威的例子，《文法俱乐部》的作者旋元佑老师也编写过一本词根书——《词源大挪移》，虽然这本书略微有些不够完善，但旋元佑老师对词根学习是相当推崇和重视。
二词根能带来什么便利?
1. 拼写
词根能帮助你把单词 以块的形式输入输出，无论在语音还是字形上。
首先，英文是拼音文字，可以从读音反推拼写是其一大特点。但是，如果单词音节以词根来划分，是不是能更好地帮助记忆读音呢?比如 epidemic 一词，
epi (among~) + dem (people) → spread among people，
流行病 epidemic 的读音就是按照词根划分。在对单词语音输入输出时，以块为单位，可以大大降低拼写错误。
其次，刨去语音，从字形的角度来看。正如中文，我们在写“解”这个字的时候，肯定是把这个字拆解成“角” “刀” “牛”三部分来输入输出的，没有人会把所有汉字的字形拆成一笔一划存储在大脑中。英文词根也能起到这样的作用，让单词成块组合，而不至于以字母为单位组合。关于字形仍然可以参考上述例子。
我个人觉得，中国人文盲(不会写汉字)比例较低的原因，除了中小学语文教学精力投入大之外，一开始进入小学就普及偏旁部首是很关键的。美国中小学生中“失读症”(Dyslexia，指单词拼写能力差)的比例之高也跟没有尽早在学习过程中推广词根(把单词像汉字一样成块地在字形上输入输出)有关。
在1988年美国“成年人识字调查”报告(1988 National Adult Literacy Survey)中的结论是：“21% - 23% 的美国成年人有严重的诵读困难，只达到 Level 1 甚至低于 Level 1 程度。(Level 1 的标准是：会写自己的名字，在驾照上可以找到有效期，在银行存钱时可以看懂存款总数。)
如果数据坐实，那么请注意：1988 年时，他们接受的还是比较传统的美国教育，至于后来“快乐教育”理念下成长起来的一代会更惨不忍睹。汉字的字形比英文难很多，而美国却有这么高的文盲率，这是很有意思的现象。
而有些人认为，英语母语的人都不学词根，我们干嘛学。这个逻辑是错误的，谁说语言学习最好的方法就是母语者习得的方法?
想象一下，一个婴儿如果拥有成年人的执行力、理解力和网状记忆力，他还要用一两年才能开口?成年人学语言自有优势，这些优势应该被尽可能地利用而不是压制，而他的劣势——母语的干扰，才应该尽可能规避。To be a newborn baby 是想强调成人学二语的时候不要在语音，语义和语法上被母语干扰，而不是指 baby 的状态就一定是最好的!
其次，词根只是规律而已，它往往和词缀放在一起被提及，但别忘了happy和unhappy是用词缀联系起来的，甚至动词的-s，-ing和-ed形式也是词缀的一种，叫屈折词缀。那么问题来了，这些规律你是否应该抵制?
规律好不好只取决于边际效益，不以人的价值判断为转移。所以，不应该讨论学不学，而应该考虑学到什么程度然后在平时阅读查词过程中不断总结精进。
2. 精确理解词义
这是我提倡词根最强大的动力，跟市面上其他人推动的目的很不一样，他们是为了让人在初期囫囵吞枣地多记单词，所以各种诡异联想大行其道。
其实两种语言之间的对应是范畴之间的对应，而不是文字之间的一一映射。这里举个GRE填空的例子：

(B) inhibited...propaganda
(C) demonstrated...hyperbole
(D) masked...exaggeration
(E) vindicated...understatement
这个题选啥呢?答案是C。整句话大意是：他从不曾展现出我为他所宣称的那种智慧，因此，我的朋友很快对我就他的能力所作的判断表示不屑一顾，认为我的判断纯属言过其实的夸张。
在这里，对dismiss的理解非常关键，下图是《美国传统字典》对dismiss的解释：
很考生背词汇书的时候被灌输单词是“遣散，开除”的意思，如此重复数十遍。这种模式下，他们无论如何都没法很好地理解上面这句话，因为很容易被dismiss这个词在基本义基础上引申的多义紧紧捆住了手脚。
但其基本的含义只是 “使……离开”。如果你有一些词根方面的基础，这个单词的理解就是这样的：
我们在捧着很多“经典”的词汇书时，一个单词后面有四五条词义，很多在中文语境中都是风马牛不相及的，然后大家就把他们称作“熟词僻义”。在任何语言里，任何单词有的任何词条，都是有规律可循的，并且也都是类似的规律。对英文而言，“熟词僻义”产生的原因不外乎以下几种情况：
未掌握该单词最本质含义而引起多义(学名叫隐喻)
仅个人感觉，这种现象占了所有一词多义现象的八成以上。而这些往往是能够通过词根来很好地解决的。比如：
anchor：anch→angle 角，引申为锚(形似)。锚的作用在于稳定。所以就有了一大片你能看到的稀奇古怪的意思：
n. 锚;锚状物;依靠;新闻节目主播;压阵队员;
v. 抛锚;停泊;用锚系住;担任(广播电视新闻节目)的主持人【主持人起稳定场面的作用，敬请参考没主持人时罗永浩和王自如的“对话”】
再比如vehicle词根为 【vey 道路】引申为传播途径，所以各种交通工具(汽车轮船飞机火箭)在有些语境中都能用这个词，也是各种其他媒介，比如赋形剂，药学的同学应该知道，它就是药物有效成分之外，为方便服用而糅杂上去的淀粉，起到传递媒介的作用。
我建议大家在学单词的时候，对于词根明显的单词采用 识而不背 的方法——不要去背具体的单词意项，只需要知道这个词根的基本含义然后在简单例句中体会它的意思跟用法就行。
单词在使用过程中的演化导致多义(学名叫转喻)
Buck一词你去美国传统字典里查会发现有十多项解释。但是它们都是从最原始的公鹿这个意思演化而来的。公鹿有角(就有鹿角的意思)，古时候用鹿皮做货币(就有美元的意思)，人们就会猎杀它，但它会用鹿角抵抗(就有抵抗的意思)，抵抗不过的时候就会逃跑(就有弯身跃起的意思)。这是为了说明问题而举的例子，要初学者这么归纳是有难度的。
单词来自于不同语源导致多义
这种情况的一词多义情况极少，占总的一词多义数量不到 5% ，比如 bat 的球棒和蝙蝠的意思就是从不同语源输入，恰好落在了同一个英文单词中。这种情况下的一词多义才真正是大家所说的熟词僻义。
3. 迅速扩大词汇量
这是市面上提倡词根学习最主要的动因。把由同一个词根引申出来的单词放在一起，对比记忆，的确比分散记忆要高效得多。比如，把【vis 看】这一族的放在一起之后，这些单词就有关联了：visit，television，adviser，vision，visual，visage, previse, supervision, revise, revisionism, provision, provisory。
再比如，proclaim, declaim, acclaim, reclaim, disclaim, exclaim。很多词根书就是把同一词根的单词放在一起，最多把词根词缀的意思机械叠加，而缺少一个可靠合理的解释。与上文dismiss一样，下面的例子来源于《没有词是一座孤岛：溯源解义学单词》，可参考学习：
这说的很清楚了。看这个解释的时候最好自己脑海里浮想相应的图景，下同。
de- 就理解成表示强调好了，对于一些细枝末节的地方自己怎么理解方便怎么来。学院派可能会抓着我这句话穷追猛打了。
ad→ac，这个转变就是下面总结的重要音变规律之一。
这个理解就很醍醐灌顶了。英文词义的衍生往往是从物质世界向人类世界发展，例如，gloomy 具有光线昏暗和心理阴暗的意思。这是具有普遍规律的，reclaim 这个词也是非常好的例子。也就是说，理解单词的时候不能把自己局限在物质世界或者人类活动，这两者之间很多时候是相通的。
此外，对于法德意等英语的亲属语种的学习而言，掌握了英文词根就是掌握了打开这些语言大门的钥匙。
学习英语rap的注意事项
1. 有必要重新定义词根学习的意义：不仅扩大词汇量，更是掌握其基本义的有效工具。
2. 词根的学习有一些基本规律，同时不会陷于缘木求鱼，舍本逐末的窘境。

from a middle class family, i was born in hsin ying, tainan on october 10th, xxxx. my father is a civil official at tainan city government. my mother is a house wife good at cooking. although i am the only child of my parents, i am by no mans a spoiled one. on the contrary, i have been expected to be a successful man with advanced education. i study hard at school. besides texts knowledge, journalism is my favorite; whenever reading, my heart is filled with great joy and interesting.
