Once upon a time, an old rich woman left all her property to the person who could answer her question correctly. Her question was this “what is the most important thing for a person who wants to succeed?” To my surprise, the answer was not money, not power, not even opportunity, but “ambition”.

Why is ambition so important? A person without ambition is like a near-sighted lion. All the things in the distance appear blurred. No matter how strong it is, it can’t go far.

A lion lives to rule the whole plain. A person must prove that “I am a king here”, at least you are the king of yourself.

Nowadays, the world is very competitive. Even if you get to the top of your own field, there might be still someone better than you. So we have to ask ourselves: what is the proof of success? I believe it is doing something for this world.

Remember: As a successful person, in addition to ambition, the other key you must hold is love. When you look back at history, you’ll find you were standing on the shoulders of the giants. You have enjoyed what they had left you. So we should live to work for the improvement of the world. From president to citizen, we should all take part in building a new WWW for which I have my own explanation ----it is“of the world, by the world, for the world”. Only as a member of the global village, can you feel you are really successful.

  My Definition of Success

“Once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the kings palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the kings palace came a handsome young prince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princesss hand triumphantly. And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after."

Why arent we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyones inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his fathers millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenals defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. Thats why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest. But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

  Thank you.

For some, success is defined in terms of the dollar amount on a paycheck. For others, its the title on their business card. Others may define success in terms of the accolades and awards they have won.

But the problem with how people define success these days is that when theyre forced to change it, they cant. Look at the businessmen who have committed suicide because they have lost fortunes. Consider the workers who are fired and then go back to work, armed with a gun.

Extreme cases, sure. Not everyone considers killing themselves or others when their livelihood is threatened. But it does point out that maybe we need to revisit our own definition of success.

Start by completing this definition: "Success to me is…"

After you complete this sentence, then review it and determine if youre on the path to achieving that success. If you were to lose your job or money tomorrow, would your definition of success still be valid? Or, would you consider yourself a failure?

I remember a job where I worked long, stressful hours and often labored for a boss who had mood swings like a freaking roller coaster. It made for a tense situation, to say the least. One day I was talking to a co-worker and the exhaustion was overwhelming. I felt so dissatisfied, frustrated and even angry. Then it hit me: If I died that day, I didnt want the only thing on my tombstone to be "Always met her deadlines."

Ugh, I remember thinking. I wanted my life to account for more than that. It wasnt until months later that I started making some real changes in my life, changes that I know made me much better able to balance my life and devote time and effort to more than my job.

Right now, times are tough and some of us are beginning to panic. But I think its a golden opportunity to really think about what is important in your life, and weed out the things that dont really matter.

You are the one who must define what success is to you. One thing I know for sure: You are more than a job title, you are worth more than a number on a paycheck and you are more than an award to hang on your wall. Is the destination you have in mind worth the road you must travel? Only you can answer that.

My friend asked me what I would change about my life if I was wealthy, and that’s when it hit me: Nothing really. the only difference would be that I would not have to be concerned about paying the monthly bills anymore, and maybe that I would purchase a nice house in the hills, but the actual contents of my life and the way I have furnished it so far would not unergo any significant transformation.

This discovery intrigued me. In fact it got me mulling over it long after the conversation with my friend was over! Just think about it for a moment: there are many wealthy people who would give away half or all of their assets if only they could obtain contentment. And there are many people balancing on the edge of poverty, but with peace in their heart, faces that smile a lot, and a set of activities that they would not want to change for the world. Now, which category of these people is really successful?

My conclusion is, that success has just as many faces as any other possible theme, depending on the society in which it is measured, and the values of the person who measures it. Wrongfully, many people confuse success with wealth: they assume that a person’s trimph can be concluded from the expensiveness of his or her watch, car, or house. They envy those in their circle of acquaintances who can financially afford more than they can. They keep comparing themselves with the Joneses and allow their happiness to depend on the level to which they can equal these people’s lifestyles. And they forget to just do the simplest thing in the world: turn inside and analyze what it is that they really like.

I think success should be more synonymous with happiness than with affluence. For it’s only when you find satisfaction with what you’re doing and don’t dread facing every new day when your task has to be embarked upon, that you are really successful. When you can move in an environment that pleases you, and when you feel at ease with the ones you deal with on a daily basis; when you feel loved, cared for, understood, and valued in what you do, and you don’t have to switch personalities from one location to another: that’s when you’ve really attained in one person’s life; when you are confronted with gratitude, not only from others toward you, but from your outer-self to your inner-self: that’s when you are a really winner.

Success, therefore, cannot be measured by what radiates from a person’s purse or material cover, but from what exudes from his or her personality. You can feel it in one’s touch, you can hear it in one’s voice and you can see it in one’s eyes. Successful people are self-assured, know what they want, and go for it. And what they want, they simply determine with feeling, and not with what others dictate them.

  So, are you successful?

I still remembered the first time when i became a technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that it happened yesterday. at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and experience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature. “stand up!” the monitor spoke loudly. the entire class stood up as i entered the classroom. i was a little puzzled, but quickly that awkwardness was over, i regained my calmness and began my well-prepared lecture, sure to gain their respect--- or even their admiration. ‘i’m your english, miss jiang. today we are going to learn . . . ’ i was very pleased with work . as the bell rang, i went back to my office full of a sense of achievement. the following day when i read my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. the first diary said, “our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. perhaps her next lecture would be better.”greatly surprised, i read diary after diary, each expressed a similar theme. “didn’t i teach them anything? i described the entire framework and laid the background for the passage we would study in class,” i puzzled. “how should they say i taught them nothing?”

it was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education weren’t the same as those of my students. i thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. my students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. what a difference! i tell myself i can handle it.’ compared to what others have been through , i’m fortunate. thinking of these sentences i felt something important struck me. i believe my life would not be that bad and it was proved to be true. later during my life and work i always told myself ‘i can handle it.’ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. and every time i said it, i always came back to my senses. now the experience with my students has made me learn a lot, and made me be a better english teacher. the following year, it was september 10th. i went to class as well. when i stepped into the class, i felt surprised. there was a post card on the table, but i didn’t show it on my face. i began teaching lessons. after the class, i walked out of the class with a card in my hand.

i opened the card in the office, it was a music card with words on it. it said ‘many thanks to you, miss jiang. we all love you we like your teaching.’ i was impressed by the words. how honest and simple the words were. hot tears couldn’t help dropping. at that time, i was so proud of being an english teacher. so here, coming to us are words that can give us strength. whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

success and failure good morning. ladies and gentlemen. life has its ups and downs. i bet everyone here has gone through success and failures, am i righttherefore, whats your understanding.

Of success and failurewhat do you think is the biggest success in ones lifexxx, can you share your idea with us personally, i think success and failure are terms that dont necessarily call for a universal definition since all of us have our own definitions. that is to say, people can be successful in different areas such as in ones job and hobbies, living a successful private life, or running a successful relationship. assume that there are two men,one is wealthy and the other is needy. the wealthy one loves making money and is alwaysbusy with his work. he is satisfied with his business though he hardly has time tohave dinner with his wife and children. the needy one loves leisure. he has an easybut low-paid job so that he can have time to spend with his family.

in general, he could have delicious and warm dinner with his families every day. hes happy, too. which one do you think is more successful in his lifein my opinion, they are both successful because they both get what they want.another example

to support my statement. i think that everyone knows luo yufeng who is in america now. severals years ago, she was under the spotlight and attracted a strong criticism.it seemed that her life was utterly a failure since everyone was laughing at her.but, i think she is successful not because she’s famous but she wanted to immigrant to america and achieved.in many cases, whether we are successful or not is judged by others, actually, we should judge it by

  thank you

  sincerely!

belief in yourself is the secret of success

from the moment we are born, our destiny had been set. it is the start of our life. as a little child, we go to school and are curious to everything in the world.

when we get older, we tend to understand the function in this world.

we start to think, sometimes wonder about life. next thing we know, we are growing up. the world is changing, and our life is changing everyday.

right now, this particular moment in our life, we think again.

we have we done in our life?

  are we successful?

  are we rich?

are we happy? and flashbacks starts, the memories took charge of our brain.

we reflect to ourselves, we question ourselves.

  why are we not successful?

  why are we not rich?

  why are we not happy?

then, we need to ask how.

  how to be successful?

  how to be rich?

  how to be happy?

with the questions, we figure out the answers. one of the dominating techqniue to be successful is first start from yourself. believe in yourself. if you dont believe in what you can do, then who else?

if you dont care about yourself, then who else? trust your feelings, believe that you can do it. and as long as you hold that thought, nothing, nothing can stop you.

the successful future right ahead of you are led by a pathway called belief.

know the room. be familiar with the place in which you will speak. arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practise using the microphone and any visual aids.

know the audience. greet some of the audience as they arrive. it’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.

know your material. if you’re not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. practise your speech and revise it if necessary.

relax. ease tension by doing exercises. visualize yourself giving your speech. imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. when you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful.

realize that people want you to succeed. audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining. they don’t want you to fail.

don’t apologize. if you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audience’s attention to something they hadn’t noticed. keep silent.

concentrate on the message — not the medium. focus your attention away from your own anxieties, and outwardly toward your message and your audience. your nervousness will dissipate.

turn nervousness into positive energy. harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm.

gain experience. experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. a toastmasters club can provide the experience you need.

Failure is what often happens.it is everywhere in your life.students may fail in exams, science may fail in their researchwork, and athletes may fail in competitions.

although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. some people dont think their failure is a very important thing at all. so they pay no attention to it. as a result, they will have the same failure a previously later.they spend their thime and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.

Success is not easy to talk about because the word success it-self has hundreds of definitions. For some it means power, for some it means wealth, for others it is fame or great achieve-ments. But I have my own understanding of it.

Success means to try your best.

Many people believe that success means to win. In my opin-ion, it means to try your best when you do everything, no matter you will win or not. When you are taking part in a long-distance race, if you keep on running as fast as you can, you are successful, although you may be the last to pass the finishing-line. Because you have showed your best to others, and you have made I your greatest effort to be the winner.

  Success means to work hard.

No one can succeed without any hard work. Karl Max was successful, because he spent more than 30 years writing the book "Communist Manifesto"; Tomas Edison succeeded, because he had experimented thousands of times to find the best material for lights. Every success calls for hard work. If you want to suc-ceed, work hard first.

other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentiond above. instend of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. after hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawong lesson from our failures.in my opinion , failure is not a bad thing , the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.

More importantly, today, the world is undergoing fast rhythm of changing, some issues occur in one way this time and reoccur in another way that time.Such instability and inconstancy make many long-time-lasting conventions and traditions not valid any longer. People encounter pile of new conditions everyday in current society, it is hard to find adequate reference from the wisdom of conventions for all of these new thing, what can really lead people to success is rational mind and creative ways of thinking. To meet the requirement of new missions, only creative activities could give out adaptive strategies. Without creative thinking ways, there would no such increasingly development of science and technology in the past two centuries, no new type America-style democracy in the world, no so many products making modern life so comfortable and convenient. Creative practices and original idea are the engine of the fast development of modern life, and are most essential for people to accomplish successful achievement in all kinds of fields.

In the twinkling of an eye, a half semester rush in our busy figure flash. The midterm is over, although the result is not everything, but it is objectively reflects our a period of learning situation. It is like a punctuation mark as a closure, as this half a semester or incomplete, or successful. One is a fact that cannot be changed. On the road to learning, we also desire happiness, the pursuit of success. But the reality is always with frustration, unfortunately haunt us. Just imagine, if TanQian choose is to give up on themselves, so the literary world would probably be less of a masterpiece. The struggle to allow failure, but not the loss of courage of overcoming the failures, the struggle to allow the tears, but can not be like the breaching of the dike river stretches without hugh. my definition of success

today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success. however, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very complicated. is fortune success? is fame success? is high social status success? no, i don’t think so. i believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.nowadays, in the modern society there are many people

who are regarded as the successful. and the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. so most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. but the problem is wether it is real success. we all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. if we keep chasing them, where is the end? what will satisfy us at last? therefore, we can see, to get the real success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes and ideals.

different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. but i am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. these are the best treasures. so now i am very proud that i have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. it is my success, cause i raise up to challenge my hope. what is success? everyone has his own interpretation as i do. but i am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. so ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life! i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed-we hold theses truths to be self-oevident, that all men are created equal. i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia, sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood. i have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. i have a dream today! when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of god’s children-black men and white men , jews and gentiles, catholics and protestants-will be able to join hands and to sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, “free at least ,free at last . thank god almighty, we are free at last.”

Success is everyone wants, whether it was or the cause of education. Give people the joy of success.

How can we succeed? The great inventor Thomas Edison said, genius is 99 percent on 1 percent of the hard work and inspiration. Success must be hard work. If you sleep, is unlikely to succeed.

Edison invented the light bulb durable, he has done many thousands of experiments, but still no way to enable the ability to live in high-temperature filament. Next to it was said: "Bah! Can not find even a. You have made so many experiments, and can not find, do not white and effort, and doing anything else now!" He said: "I must ability to find a live high-temperature materials, he must find out. "work pays off, he finally invented a durable light bulb, so that the well-being of people around the world to be known as the 20th century, one of the greatest inventions.

We need to learn the spirit of his, if he was not unremitting efforts, it is impossible to invent the light bulb durability, we can see the need for the conditions of success, as long as required to meet the conditions for success, success easy.

Seize the opportunity is one of the conditions for success. For example it! Bill Gates, the worlds richest university, a keen awareness of the emerging computer industry in this huge business opportunities, he dropped out from Harvard University, and with their friends opened a computer company called Microsoft, when his friends Friends are opposed to what he has done, but Bill Gates said, time will prove that I am right to do so. Now, computers in all walks of life in a wide range of applications, to the peoples work and life have brought tremendous changes, Microsoft has become the worlds largest software one.

There are a lot of success, for example, scientific and cultural qualities of their own. Without a good basic knowledge, even though hard work and a heaven-sent opportunity to succeed or not. There are left to help others, it is necessary to embark on the path of success and is exceptionally difficult.

To be successful, needs to be done and opportunities.

Today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.

success, as is known, is the pursuit of many ambitious people. it requires much of a person.in my above all,one should be a person of strong perseverance. rome was not built in a day. on our long way to success, there are undoubtedly many difficulties standing in the way.

If we lose heart and give up halfway, nothing can be achieved. throughout history, we havehad many famous successful people in the world, of whom no one is weak-minded. take the great american scientist edison as an example, he tried experiment after experiment and had one failure after another before he finally invented the bulb, which lighted up the whole world. so we can conclude perseverance can surely be one of the secrets of success. furthermore, one needs to work hard to realize his dream just as the famous saying goes “hard wor leads to success”.

look at these around us and we’ll find diligent people are always the favor of our society. they usually achieve more than expected. why do so many of our classmates of average intelligence go far ahead of othershard work is definitely supposed to be the answer. and still, i hold that one must keep in pace with the informative world. there’s no denying that our world is changing every day. so one can never be locked alone inside his own room, doing his research work and dedicated to book knowledge how can an isolated person be well-informed enough to go ahead of othersif so, that could be ridiculous. success is what one desires. so long as one is perseverant, hardworking and up-to-date, i am sure success is near at hand.

It is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. But I believe that success is not external. I believe that success comes from within. My definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. That means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity.

I also believe that success is not discriminatory. Success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. A good example of success is that of Beethoven. He is one of the worlds most famous composers, yet he was deaf. He could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. Yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music.

Nothing Succeeds Without a Strong Will “Where there is a will, there isway” is an old proverb which almost everyone knows, but not all understand it sowell.

Actually, it means that if you are really resolved to do something, nomatter how difficult it might be, never give fact, strong will is a kindof good quality which successful people should own.A great man is always onewho has a firm resolution and an inflexible spirit.

One will never succeed all his life without a firm will to get the a rule, great tasks are accomplished by men of strong xample, Yatsen, the founder of the Republic of China, set the Chinesepeople free from the Manchurian rule through a long period of hard struggle.

Many of his attempts failed and many of his followers were killed, but hehad an inflexible spirit and stuck to his lly, he made the revolutionof 1911 a same is true of men in all walks of is quiteobvious that there is nothing difficult in the world, if you make up your mindto do it, you will certainly accomplish your stands to reason.

So as for students like us, we should have a good attitude towards ng with difficulties and failures, keep heads up and never give des,we should make full preparation, though strong will help us overcome thedifficulties, it is not for person who has no preparation.

Everyone knows that diligence is the key to a proverb goes: “Diligence is the mother of success.” Diligence means working hard andpersistently.

All famous people of great achievements are examples of allowe their success to hard out constant efforts, no one can expect tosucceed in doing anything as Edison kept on working hard for a longtime before he was able to invent he electric me Curie worked hard inthe poor conditions for many years before she finally discovered people may attribute success to good good luck favors those who arewell prepared and diligent people who can make use of idleness can onlylead to you do not devote yourself to your study and work, you canhardly make a living, let alone make some accomplishments.

As high school students, we must be aware that the only way to success ishard must concentrate our attention on our studies, and make full useof our precious time, in order to meet the fierce challenges in the is certain that our future success will only rest on ourconstant a proverb goes: “Only by working hard can we reap a bumperharvest.”

Have you ever thought why there are very few great people? I think there is probably only one great person out of 10,000 at best, and most probably much less than that. But why? Most people want to be great, right? Why are there only very few of them? Here is the reason:

Most people do not pay the price of greatness.

I think this one is quite obvious. Now, the next question is: why not? If there are so many people who want to be great, why only very few of them actually pay the price? The answer to these questions explains the difference between the almost 100% people who want to be great and the much less than 0.01% who actually be so.

The reason why very few people actually pay the price is this: The road to greatness is continuously painful for long time.

Greatness requires sacrifices and there is no sacrifice without pain. The kind of sacrifices required for greatness is the ones that make the process continuously painful for long time. If you want to be good it will be painful only every now and then, and many people can still handle it. But being great is a totally different level. The pain is much deeper and it is continuous. Very few people can endure this kind of pain and that’s why there are very few great people. Most people naturally choose things that bring pleasures to them. It’s unnatural to choose pain over pleasure, let alone doing it continuously for long time.

But that’s what I believe is the secret to greatness: The secret to greatness is choosing pain over pleasures continuously for long time.

Im really excited to share with you some findings that really surprise me about what makes companies succeed the most, what factors actually matter the most for startup success.I believe that the startup organization is one of the greatest forms to make the world a better place.

If you take a group of people with the right equity incentives and organize them in a startup, you can unlock human potential in a way never before possible. You get them to achieve unbelievable things. But if the startup organization is so great, why do so many fail? Thats what I wanted to find out.I wanted to find out what actually matters most for startup success. And I wanted to try to be systematic about it, avoid some of my instincts and maybe misperceptions I have from so many companies Ive seen over the years.I wanted to know this because Ive been starting businesses since I was 12 years old when I sold candy at the bus stop in junior high school。

to high school, when I made solar energy devices, to college, when I made loudspeakers. And when I graduated from college, I started software companies. And XX years ago, I started Idealab, and in the last XX years, we started more than XXX companies, many successes, and many big failures. We learned a lot from those failures. So I tried to look across what factors accounted the most for company success and failure. So I looked at these five. First, the idea. I used to think that the idea was everything. I named my company Idealab for how much I worship the "aha!" moment when you first come up with the idea. But then over time, I came to think that maybe the team, the execution, adaptability, that mattered even more than the idea. I never thought Id be quoting boxer Mike Tyson on the TED stage, but he once said, "Everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the face." (Laughter) And I think thats so true about business as well. So much about a teams execution is its ability to adapt to getting punched in the face by the customer. The customer is the true reality. And thats why I came to think that the team maybe was the most important thing. Then I started looking at the business model. Does the company have a very clear path generating customer revenues? That started rising to the top in my thinking about maybe what mattered most for success. Then I looked at the funding. Sometimes companies received intense amounts of funding. Maybe thats the most important thing?

And then of course, the timing. Is the idea way too early and the worlds not ready for it? Is it early, as in, youre in advance and you have to educate the world? Is it just right? Or is it too late, and theres already too many competitors? So I tried to look very carefully at these five factors across many companies. And I looked across all 100 Idealab companies, and 100 non-Idealab companies to try and come up with something scientific about it. So first, on these Idealab companies, the top five companies -- Citysearch, CarsDirect, GoTo, NetZero, Tickets.com -- those all became billion-dollar successes. And the five companies on the bottom -- Z.com, Insider Pages, MyLife, Desktop Factory, Peoplelink -- we all had high hopes for, but didnt succeed. So I tried to rank across all of those attributes how I felt those companies scored on each of those dimensions. And then for non-Idealab companies, I looked at wild successes, like XXXX and XXXX and XXX andXXX and XXXX. And some failures: Webvan, Kozmo, Pets.com Flooz and Friendster. The bottom companies had intense funding, they even had business models in some cases, but they didnt succeed. I tried to look at what factors actually accounted the most for success and failure across all of these companies, and the results really surprised me.The number one thing was timing.

Timing accounted for 42 percent of the difference between success and failure. Team and execution came in second, and the idea, the differentiability of the idea, the uniqueness of the idea, that actually came in third. Now, this isnt absolutely definitive, its not to say that the idea isnt important, but it very much surprised me that the idea wasnt the most important thing. Sometimes it mattered more when it was actually timed. The last two, business model and funding, made sense to me actually. I think business model makes sense to be that low because you can start out without a business model and add one later if your customers are demanding what youre creating. And funding, I think as well, if youre underfunded at first but youre gaining traction, especially in todays age, its very, very easy to get intense funding. So now let me give you some specific examples about each of these. So take a wild success like Airbnb that everybody knows about. Well, that company was famously passed on by many smart investors because people thought, "No ones going to rent out a space in their home to a stranger." Of course, people proved that wrong. But one of the reasons it succeeded, aside from a good business model, a good idea, great execution, is the timing. That company came out right during the height of the recession when people really needed extra money, and that maybe helped people overcome their objection to renting out their own home to a stranger.Same thing with Uber. Uber came out, incredible company, incredible business model, great execution, too. But the timing was so perfect for their need to get drivers into the system. Drivers were looking for extra money; it was very, very important. Some of our early successes, Citysearch, came out when people needed web pages. GoTo.com, which we announced actually at TED in 1998, was when companies were looking for cost-effective ways to get traffic.

We thought the idea was so great, but actually, the timing was probably maybe more important. And then some of our failures. We started a company called Z.com, it was an online entertainment company. We were so excited about it -- we raised enough money, we had a great business model, we even signed incredibly great Hollywood talent to join the company. But broadband penetration was too low in 1999-20xx. It was too hard to watch video content online, you had to put codecs in your browser and do all this stuff, and the company eventually went out of business in XXXX. Just two years later, when the codec problem was solved by Adobe Flash and when broadband penetration crossed 50 percent in America, YouTube was perfectly timed. Great idea, but unbelievable timing. In fact, YouTube didnt even have a business model when it first started. It wasnt even certain that that would work out. But that was beautifully, beautifully timed.

So what I would say, in summary, is execution definitely matters a lot. The idea matters a lot. But timing might matter even more. And the best way to really assess timing is to really look at whether consumers are really ready for what you have to offer them. And to be really, really honest about it, not be in denial about any results that you see, because if you have something you love, you want to push it forward, but you have to be very, very honest about that factor on timing.

As I said earlier, I think startups can change the world and make the world a better place. I hope some of these insights can maybe help you have a slightly higher success ratio, and thus make something great come to the world that wouldnt have happened otherwise.Thank you very much, youve been a great audience.

why arent we tired of something so fanciful,so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative?how can a story like that endure generations of repetition? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success:

  1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess;

  2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks;

  3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through;

and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

the story not only caters to everyones inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his fathers millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.

if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenals defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. thats why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair,he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of me,it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.

let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of

wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

I believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful.

Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one an.

One of the themes that are common to everyone is how to become believe that luck is essential to peoples success, while others assertthat hard work has everything to do with balance, I tend to agreethat hard work is a valuable factor contributed to peoples success.

“no pains, no gains” out exerting oneself, one could never expect toachieve success in no matter what one is is known to all, there is noroyal road to the summit of is likely to succeed only when one hasworked with whole-hearted devotion and perseverance.

Those who are lazy, sloppy and indifferent to their work, those who neverconcentrate on work will definitely end in the whole, as far as theyare concerned, hard-working is the decisive factor to success.

In my view, When opportunities come, meet and make full use of in this way can we succeed one day.

To exemplify what success means to me, I pose a question to all of you. What brings us together here today? I believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. The effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. I believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in expressing themselves. These people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. I once went to Australia and I saw two pictures, Once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. The picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. The other was life-like, full of details and imagination. What this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these children.

My ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. These children have been neglected, but I feel that I can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to express themselves.

I realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. But I believe in my ideals and I will stick to them--even in the face of adversity. We should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. For a life without ideals is not living.

  Thank you!

good! in this weather, sun days, we ushered in the primary school level in the last gather.

and around to wave farewell to the campus, though, there are a thousand words can not express my feeling of attachment to his alma mater. students believe that, you feel as i do with it. from school to the present, i am most impressed by the school is the cherry tree in front of trees and the edge of the tree small tree. that little tree is my first year in the guard when the old man saw the seeds of, and now that it has added a six-ring, and the cherry tree has witnessed its growth. we like the little tree, and the campus is the cherry trees, is not it?

watching all the campus, is so familiar with, can not help but brought back memories of my ... ...

remember that second-grade "61" childrens day, the school playground is now only one-third of the ground but not the plastic cement, as a result of the auction would be too crowded, i was squeezing the students fell. only heard "jenna" and say, i fall on the cement floor, and when i difficult to climb up from, it was found that the skin of the left knee has been frayed, blood flow quickly out, i slowly walked to the classroom, continue to spread the pain. at this time, met a lot of students said: "funny, how the?" "oh, you knee the frayed, tease, how to engage in, to, paper towels, put the stone around the wound erase it!" "oh, quick to the health room! "bork, bork, bork concerned with the students asked me. later, i was with a group of well-intentioned arm mounted x school went to the health room, xu teachers to help me carefully cleaning the wound, the medicine, i grinned in pain呲you want to cry, to comfort students, i hold back the tears. although not to the activities of the afternoon, and can only stay in the classroom, but my heart is still full and happy!

remember the tug-of-war a year ago, the decider in the final, we lost the power of the second seeded player disparity - 501 classes. what? we have failed, it is our experience of three tug-of-wars biggest setback, because we have never been defeated before, the situation was very tense, one-to-one level! we became a draw play, the final outcome of the board is scheduled! after all, we have the beginning of some sad, some resulting in decreased strength, but the thought of collective honor above all else, it once again full of confidence, full of energy on the floor of the "battlefield" &;quot;come on, come on!" cao teachers led the team pulling to one side cheering for us, we keep a stiff upper lip, were doing a full, good! rope has been moved to our side, increasing margins, and with the referees whistle out the other side of the rope of a song that we are all collapsed. "victory, victory!" we are lying on the ground cheered: "" five consecutive championships, five consecutive championships! "cao teachers face is flushed with excitement. yes, we have after some twists and turns ultimately on the strength once again won the first prize!

set of clothing, i have it hung in the closet where the most conspicuous, as it witnessed the first performance school!

remember the past primary school life, each touch of our unique memory of the clouds in the sky.

time flies, time flies, we are about to bid farewell to the division of friends of primary and secondary schools, secondary schools entered the door, bid farewell to the naive and innocent childhood into young and mature man.

Have you ever thought why there are very few great people? I think there is probably only one great person out of 10,000 at best, and most probably much less than that. But why? Most people want to be great, right? Why are there only very few of them? Here is the reason:

  你有没有想过为什么成功的人那么少?我想,大概在一万个人里有一个人能获得成功就很好了。但是为什么会这样呢?我们大多数人都渴望成功,不是吗?那为什么成功的人还是屈指可数呢?原因如下:

Good afternoon! everyone! Nice to meet you all let me introduce name is xx.Im from the xx my topic is “HARD WORK LEADS TO SUCCESS”. I hope you will like it .

First I want to ask you a brought people to success? Yes,the answer is you must work hard .

We have learned that those who rise to the heights in any field aren’t those with the greatest natural talent, but those who working harder and harder. Of course, for hard work to really pay off,we need to work effectively, here’s how:

The first one is “follow your dream” must have a direction for your your objectives early, then devote all your energies to achieving them. And the second is “block out the time”To be beneficial, you must be regular。For example,if you want to be an experienced engineer ,then you must to give up many leisure time, you must to studying hard, summing up your experiences for years..

The third is “take One step at a time”’t aim to reach the top in a single session, just try to improve by one percent over the session before.

And the forth is “look back”. May be you can ask yourself frequently.“Am I have any “soft spots”?”if you do,try to find them and make some effort to identify the weaknesses, then try to do better tomorrow.

The last is “hold out a carrot”,whatever your work needs, always hold out a reward for your achievement. For example ,if you finish the day’s scheduled work, you can go out watching a movie or just eating with your good friends, such a reward will inspire you to work harder and harder.

Ladies and gentlemen,we all know work is a chance to find you think of work as a punishment, how can you achieve your goals?

Ladies and gentlemen,Working hard does have its drawbacks ,its difficukties and painful moments, sometimes maybe you want to give up the whole we all believe, after all the drawbacks, there’s a benefit.

Hard work is the way to the end of the rainbow.

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s working harder and harder, for ourselves, for our company and for our this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.

You have been a very attentive audience, thank you ,thank you all.

  dear all,

experience makes you succeedi still remembered the first time when i became a technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that it happened yesterday.

at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and experience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature.

“stand up!” the monitor spoke loudly. the entire class stood up as i entered the classroom. i was a little puzzled, but quickly that awkwardness was over, i regained my calmness and began my well-prepared lecture, sure to gain their respect--- or even their admiration. ‘i’m your english, miss jiang. today we are going to learn . . . ’ i was very pleased with work . as the bell rang, i went back to my office full of a sense of achievement. the following day when i read my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. the first diary said, “our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. perhaps her next lecture would be better.” greatly surprised, i read diary after diary, each expressed a similar theme.
