Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody doing today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.
Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.” (Laughter.)
So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now, I’ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I’ve talked about responsibility a lot.
I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.
I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.
I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working, where students aren’t getting the opportunities that they deserve.
But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.
I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that’s assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

President Mellow, distinguished faculty, friends, family, and the Graduating Class of .
It is a great honor for me to share in your accomplishment and pride today. But I must admit that I approached this address with some trepidation. I suppose that more commencement speeches have been delivered more seriously, listened to more attentively, and forgotten more promptly than any other form of human communication.
So I will try to be brief and practical. My advice is grounded in my own experience. And my own experience, in many respects, is not that different from many of yours.
I grew up with the idea that college was more an aspiration than an expectation. I saw my parents struggle most of their lives and the daily battle to keep afloat sometimes even drained what hopes and dreams they had for me. They didn't go to college and neither did my only, older sibling.
My father sorted mail for the post office. He worked nights because it paid 10% more than a day shift. My mother was a receptionist at a burglar alarm company — one of the few growth industries in our neighborhood. I grew up in the Linden Houses, which, as some of you know, is a housing project in East New York.
It was and is a tough neighborhood, though it produced some accomplished people who, despite or because of their background, did well. I attended Thomas Jefferson high school, which has since shut down as a high school and operates different training programs for various skills. Up until high school, I shared a small apartment with my extended family, which included my grandmother, my sister and my nephew.
But looking back, I grew up in a world of unlimited opportunity. Each night I would read, and reading opened up the world to me. I love reading history and especially biography. In biographies, you are almost always reading about people who started out unimportant but ended up having a significant life.
What I liked most about biographies then and now is that the person you are reading about is in his or her early life on page 50, doesn't know about the success he or she will achieve on page 300. They couldn't see the greatness that lay ahead.
If you think about it, that's a great justification for the optimism that you should have for the life ahead of you. All of you are only on about page 50 of your biography, with hundreds of pages to go.
Growing up, my biggest goal was just to get out of East New York. I took the college entrance exam and committed myself to getting into college. I did. The day I left for college was one of the first trips I made out of New York City.
College was an intimidating place for me. The other students seemed naturally confident; many had traveled and seemed to understand the world. To this day, I can't forget how insecure I felt, but it made me work harder.
Once I realized I belonged, I became more ambitious. Ambition is your inner voice that tells you you can and should strive to go beyond your circumstances or station in life. You have overcome obstacles, pressures and self-doubt and you have done it because you have ambition.
You want to succeed for your families and yourselves. And there is no more powerful force through which to do that than through education and know how.
I'm proud that LaGuardia and Goldman Sachs have teamed up to support small businesses. Through this partnership, I've seen how many LaGuardia students are juggling school, job and family. And, I've seen how these students and all of you push yourselves and persevere.
By virtue of being here today, you have proven to yourself that you belong. And now that you belong, feed off your ambition. That means being focused, disciplined, demanding, self critical and open minded. Your challenges won't fall away. In fact, they may get steeper.
That, my friends, is life. But just as the struggles are great, so are the rewards. There's another way to look at it: ask yourself if you really have a choice. You already knew the answer to that question the first day you walked into LaGuardia. We owe it to our families and to ourselves to keep striving.
This is certainly not the easiest of economic times, but there's always an economic cycle. In the course of the next 50 years of your life, you'll see alot of cycles, and like this one, you'll get through it. Don't get caught up in unrealistic optimism or detached pessimism.
Still, a lot can change rapidly and with a lot of force. Your security rests in knowing how to do a variety of things -- and being able to do them better than others.
And that knowledge and ability can be obtained only through a willingness to strike out for something better. That could mean changing careers or pushing for a new idea or strategy in your current one. In either case, push yourself to try something new and to grow with each move.
After college, I went to law school for three years, and then into my dream job at a big NY law firm. But even though it had been my dream, I didn't like it once I got there.
For the first time, I was feeling financially secure, but I knew I wasn't passionate enough about what I was doing. And because I didn't love it, I would never be fulfilled from it, or be really good at it. Someone who loved it more would have greater enthusiasm and focus. For some it was fun; for me it was always going to be a chore.
After five years at a law firm, I decided I wanted to try something different. I came home and told my wife I was quitting, and she cried. And not out of happiness. Anyway, it worked out. I got a new job at a small Wall Street firm, we got bought out by a larger firm, and I ended up remaining at a large firm... Goldman Sachs.
In my career, I've been fortunate to know and work with many of this country's top CEOs and business leaders. I'm always struck by a certain passion that defines them. While they may be wealthy and powerful, their passion goes beyond money and power.
I won't stand here and tell you those are bad things. They can be pretty good, but only if you have a larger purpose in mind. If you don't have passion for your work or the drive to make a better life for your kids than your own, then you won't have what it takes to keep you going.
So, I'd like to leave you with some specific advice that will hopefully keep you going:
First, confidence really matters.
Recognize you have earned the right to be confident. Most of you have made great sacrifices and overcome great obstacles to get where you are today. You built up muscles that others who've had an easier time don't have. Those muscles will serve you for the rest of your life.
My struggle to get to and through college turned out to be an advantage for me. The disadvantages you have had become part of your personal history and track record, all advantages in your later life. So confidence is justified.
Second, find a job that you like.
You'll be better at it and you'll last longer in it. Having said that, in a tough economy, or because of family pressures, you may not aways be able take a risk with a job choice. And, no doubt, we've all settled at various times.
But, don't let necessity in a given moment become the excuse for a lifetime of inertia. Keep trying to get yourself to the right place. If I'd stayed a lawyer, I could have made it work for a while, but I would have fizzled out and eventually because I didn't love it.
Third, be a well rounded, complete person.
many of you will go for further education or career training. Of course, it's important to learn the things that you need to make a living. But, don't forget to read, and to learn history, literature and about current events.
You'll be more interesting to others, more interesting to yourself and you'll be more successful in your job. Most of the books I've read didn't apply directly to my job or industry, but I've applied their lessons in unexpected ways.
Fourth, be involved in the community.
Find ways to contribute to make yourself proud and set an example to your kids. making a living is not life. It is a means to an end, not the end. You have to feel proud of yourself. There are always going to be people who struggle and for whom community work is not a realistic option, but try.
I've done plenty to advance myself over the years. But, the older I get, the more satisfaction I get from serving and advancing others. In fact that's how I first got involved with President Mellow and LaGuardia -- through the 10,000 Small Businesses program we initiated at your school.
Finally, appreciate that life is unpredictable, so don't close your mind to possibilities.
Try to surround yourself with people who are equally ambitious. Put yourself in situation where you can grow — where you'll not only push yourself but others will push you.
What were the chances that a kid from the poverty would run one of the great financial institutions in the world? You just never know. That unpredictability is the great thing about life. You change. The world changes.
You live in a country where we are still blessed with enormous opportunity. Leave yourself open to the world of possibility. You have the ambition, you have the smarts and you have the toughness. So, turn the page on your biography -- you have just started a new chapter in your lives.
Good luck and congratulations to you and your families.

January first. The beginning of a new year. As far back in history as we can tell, people have celebrated the start of a new year.
The people of ancient Egypt began their new year in summer. That is when the Nile River flooded its banks, bringing water and fertility to the land. The people of ancient Babylonia and Persia began their new year on March twenty-first, the first day of spring. And, some Native American Indians began their new year when the nuts of the oak tree became ripe. That was usually in late summer.
Now, almost everyone celebrates New Year's Day on January first. Today, as before, people observe the New Year's holiday in many different ways.
The ancient Babylonians celebrated by forcing their king to give up his crown and royal clothing. They made him get down on his knees and admit all the mistakes he had made during the past year.
This idea of admitting wrongs and finishing the business of the old year is found in many societies at new year's. So is the idea of making resolutions. A resolution is a promise to change your ways. To stop smoking, for example. Or to get more physical exercise.
Noise-making is another ancient custom at the new year. The noise is considered necessary to chase away the evil spirits of the old year. People around the world do different things to make a lot of noise. They may hit sticks together. Or beat on drums. Or blow horns. Or explode fireworks.
Americans celebrate the New Year in many ways.
Most do not have to go to work or school. So they visit family and friends. Attend church services. Share a holiday meal. Or watch new year's parades on television. Two of the most famous parades are the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Both have existed for many years.
Americans also watch football on television on New Year's Day. Most years, university teams play in special holiday games.
For those who have been busy at work or school, New Year's may be a day of rest. They spend the time thinking about, and preparing for, the demands of the new year.

10-15 What is One Breath English
Dear ladies and gentlemen:
Thank you for the warm welcome. It’s an honor to be here today. I’m here on a mission. I have an important message. I’m convinced it will change your life. English is everywhere. English is a key to success. We must learn and master it.
So many of us study English like hell. So few of us can speak it well. What do you think is the reason? The problem is right here! The problem is remembering. The problem is that we forget what we learn.
Luckily , through years of research ,we’ve created a new way to learn . With this specially designed material and method, we can retain what we learn forever. It’s called One Breath English.
What is One Breath English? Why shall we learn it, what it all about?
First, it’s a breakthrough technique. It’s easy to remember. It’s designed to be memorized. Repeat nine lines like crazy. Speak as fast as you can. Say it within five seconds. It will become second nature. It will be ingrained in your memory. You will remember it for the rest of your life.
Second, the material is full of life. It’s not boring book English. It’s the core essence of daily American speech. The content is uplifting. It’s considerate and polite. People will like what you say. You’ll gain confidence. You’ll communicate better. You’ll become a better person.
Third, it’s fun to learn. It’s a five second test. It’s just like playing a game. You challenge yourself. You race against the clock. You will improve every time you try. Speak English to yourself day and night. Speak English to everyone around you. It’s fun to impress people.
Fourth, One Breath English is very healthy. It’s a fountain of youth. It will make you become younger. What makes people grow old? It’s anxiety, stress and loss of hope. Reciting English will curre these problems. Chant it over and over. Say it to yourself again and again. Your anxiety, depression and loneliness will all go away.
The bottom line is that One Breath English gets results. It’s organized and systematic. This is a great discovery. It’s totally revolutionary. It’s unprecedented in language learning history. The English revolution is NOW! One Breath English is the way. Let’s open our books and begin.

“Once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince…“ Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line ”And they live happily every after.“
Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term ”success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

good evening,ladies and gentlemen,
today,my topic is about expressing the appreciation to our mothers.
a few days ago,i have read a news about a mother who walked 18 days back home after a visit to her son who works in the city.the mother did this just because she wanted to save 100 yuan for
him.during the jurney, she had to beg for meals and ask people to take her in in the night.sometimes, unfortunately, she got nothing and had to sleep in caves with starvation.18 days later, when the police found her,she was exhausted and weak.the mother is already 52 years
old, what`s her motivation for doing thisi think everybody knows the answer, yes,it`s the selfless love for her son.
we always say that mother love is the greatest love in the world,as we are growing,we enjoy the delicious food she cooked,we enjoy the clean clothes she washed,we get used to the privilege she gave us. then, gradually,we just take it for granted and begin to find her nagging.we tend to pay less attention to her and sometimes even ignore her.ladies and gentlemen, can you remember what did you do to show your mother your love on her birthdaysi am pretty sure that the younger you were, the more attention you would pay.even though, your mother still love you the same.
on mother`s day,i received a message from one of my best
friends, she said:i am appreciated to your mother for giving birth to you 20 years ago, because it gave me the chance to become your friend.i was moved by these words and can`t help thinking: what a mother isshe is the one who will walk for 18 days just to save 100
yuan for you.she is the one who will keep loving you and expect no return.she is the one who has already sacrificed a lot for you and is ready to sacrifice more.whybecause she got the name mother immediately after you were born.
so,ladies and gentlemen, please be greatful to our mothers, and please cherish the miracle our mothers have made since the
day we came to this world.
thank you very much !
Second, celebrate the bigger picture. Despite the constant media buzz about the turbulent state of youth today, most of the applications I reviewed – as well as those reviewed by my colleagues at Stanford and elsewhere – are truly remarkable. And in most cases, those denied admission to some schools are admitted to others. The transition from high school to college is a monumental turning point, and it’s more important to focus on how a young adult is moving on to a new stage than where that stage happens to be. This is the moment when parents should mark the success of their children and rejoice in the excitement that the next four years will bring.
And that leads to my final point: Education is what a student makes of it. Of course, certain schools have resources that others don’t, but they all offer opportunities to learnand to grow.
I am reminded of a teenager graduating high school in Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1975, who applied to only Stanford and one other school. He was understandably disappointed when denied admission here, but he later excelled as an undergraduate at the distinguished university across San Francisco Bay, UC Berkeley.
He went on to earn a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and to become a research scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins. In , he joined the Stanford University School of Medicine and was the co‐winner of the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in .
Andrew Fire is not atypical when it comes to Stanford applicants. Nor for that matter is John Etchemendy, the Stanford provost and philosophy professor who also was denied admission as an undergraduate. Nor are any of the thousands of others who aren’t accepted to Stanford and go on to have fulfilling lives.
An undergraduate degree from Stanford, or an Ivy League college, may well end up being only one line at the bottom of a resume. What parents and college applicants across the country need to remember is that the news they receive, whether good or bad, is but a single step on a much longer journey.

In highschool, we are required to follow our teachers’ steps and finish theirassignments every day and even every course. While in college, there are noteachers giving such detailed requirements to us and we can choose study or notaccording to our own willing. What to study and how to study is totally dependson us. Therefore, the ability of self-control is very important in collegelife. Second, the flexibility of time is another difference. In high school, wehave no much leisure except for our time of study. However, in college, we havemuch leisure controlled by ourselves except the time of classes. And we havemore time to do what we like. Finally, college life is much more various andrich than the high school one. In addition to study, we can attend many otheractivities in leisure and these activities make our college life be more wonderful.
In brief, there are both similarities anddifferences between high school life and college life. However, no matter weare in which period, we need to make full use of every day so that we willnever feel regretful.
Disposition Decides to Man’s Success
Aswe all known, the man who wants to be success should have a good disposition. Asthe saying goes, “disposition decide to everything.” I remember a famous motto:there are no two identical people in the world, but the success people aresimilar in many ways. Exactly, good disposition is the foundation of success. Frommy point of view, I deemed it success should also rely on these factors: diligent, confident, humor. It can help us to open the door of success.
Thereis no denying that diligent is the first step to the success. As the proverbsays, no pains, no gains. Absolutely, guess that a person without diligent, howcan he get achievements. Many successful people have become famous in the worldby their diligent. Therefore we should take diligence as a good habit ratherthan lazy at every time.
Edisonsaid “confident is the mother of the success. There is no doubt that confidenceis important to our daily life .If someone without confident, he will never succeedin the end of his life. If someone trusted himself, he would gained more chanceto succeed. How could you get other’s trust if you didn't trust yourself?
Inaddition, humor plays an important role in our life. It’s obvious that a senseof humor can bring happiness to others and get involved to a group easily. Justlike my friend who is an energetic and lovely boy. The boss and staff like himvery much. Boss thinks highly of him in the company. Sometimes, we should learnto how express humorously. A sense of humor can create unexpected result.
Fromwhat has been mention above, a good disposition is an important factor to oursuccess. Therefore, how to develop a good disposition is essential.
Should Abandoned Island be Existed?
A charity organization was set up not too long ago, but it has already caused a strong social discussion. This organization called Abandoned Island, as the name implies, this place is set up for the parents who don’t want to raise their baby anymore. In my opinion, abandoned island has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, one of the important advantages is that the abandoned island is a haven for abandoned babies, which in one sense, is saving their live. All of the babies in abandoned island are seriously sick, their disease is very difficult to treat and it must cost bunch of money. The parents abandon them here are mainly because they don’t have money to pay the treatment and hoping the abandoned island could save their baby’s live. Besides, abandoned island can stop parents from abandoning baby in dumpster or toilet, which is a crime.
On the other hand, the abandoned island also have disadvantage. This organization might become an encouragement to abandon baby for the parents who have a sick one. Most parents would spend all of their money to cure their baby, and a part of them will give up after they don’t have any money to cure them, and abandon their baby. Once the parents know there are a wonder place to take care of their sick baby for free, it might cases a phenomenon that most parents might give up their baby in the first place.
Through the above analysis, there is no denying that abandoned island has the positive aspects as well as the negative ones. Taking both of them into account, I suggest that the abandoned island should be existed, because it can save lives,if they were abandoned in dumpster, they have nothing to do but die.
